    Amy Corderoy
(The Sydney Morning Herald, August 16, 2012)

"Global public health authorities have hailed the High Court decision [this week in Australia] -- and with 1 billion people expected to die from tobacco-related illnesses this century, the stakes have never been higher. The World Health Organisation hopes the decision will embolden poorer countries to enact laws without the fear of heavy legal bills...The president of the US-based global organisation Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Matthew Myers, said...'Countries around the world have been waiting for this decision to move forward themselves on plain paper packaging'...New Zealand will likely be the next country to adopt plain packaging, with a public consultation already under way. The director of Action on Smoking and Health New Zealand, Ben Youdan, said...New Zealand gets most of its cigarettes from Australia so it would be easy for the country to use the same packaging...The president of the Australian Council on Smoking and Health, Mike Daube, has said 17 European countries had expressed interest in plain packaging."
